#206 True and False Prophets | Matthew 7:15-20
by Dr. Philip ZimmermanIn Episode #206 of the Way of the Bible podcast, we continue our journey through the Sermon on the Mount with a sobering and essential warning from Jesus: “Watch out for false prophets.” These words are not merely cautionary—they are a direct call to spiritual awareness and personal responsibility.
This episode explores the full biblical context of prophets, both true and false, revealing that the presence of false voices is not new. From the earliest chapters of Genesis to the teachings of Jesus and the writings of the apostles, Scripture consistently affirms that deception operates alongside truth. Beginning with figures like Enoch and Abraham, and extending through Moses, Balaam, and the prophets of Israel, we see that God has always spoken through chosen individuals. Yet alongside them, false prophets have continually emerged, often indistinguishable on the surface.
Jesus’ warning in Matthew 7:15–20 builds on this long history. False prophets come “in sheep’s clothing,” appearing harmless, even righteous. But inwardly, they are “ferocious wolves.” The distinguishing mark, Jesus says, is their fruit. Just as a tree is known by what it produces, so too are spiritual leaders revealed by the outcome of their lives and teachings.
This episode emphasizes that discernment is not optional for believers. It is a necessary discipline. Drawing from passages such as Deuteronomy 13 and 18, 2 Peter 2, and Paul’s letters, we see that false teachers may speak convincingly, perform signs, or even appear successful. However, if their message leads away from the truth of God’s Word, they are not to be followed.
A key takeaway is the importance of testing every message against Scripture and seeking confirmation through the Holy Spirit. Like the Bereans in Acts 17:11, believers are called to examine what they hear daily, ensuring that it aligns with God’s revealed truth. This responsibility cannot be outsourced to pastors, teachers, or institutions—it belongs to each individual follower of Christ.
The episode also highlights a challenging reality: false prophets are allowed to exist. Their presence serves as a test of faith, revealing whether individuals truly love God and remain committed to His truth. Until the final judgment, both truth and deception will coexist.
Ultimately, this teaching points us back to Jesus Himself—the true Prophet, Priest, and King. He alone speaks the words of the Father perfectly and leads us into eternal life.
As the episode concludes, listeners are left with a personal question: If you discover that you are being led by a false teacher, what will you do?
The answer carries eternal significance.
