#216 A Walk on the Beach w/DrZ | Who Choose Whom? - Part 2
by Dr. Philip Zimmerman [DrZ]Episode #216 concludes our eight-part mini-series, "Response to the Sermon on the Mount," by bringing together the central themes Jesus presents in Matthew 7:24-27. In this final "Walk on the Beach with DrZ," our walk unexpectedly moves indoors as a coastal storm rolls through, providing a fitting backdrop for Jesus' illustration of two builders facing life's inevitable storms.
Throughout this series we have focused on the wise builder—the one who hears Jesus' words and puts them into practice. Jesus' illustration is not primarily about construction techniques or even earthly adversity. Rather, it points to the certainty of God's coming judgment and the eternal significance of the foundation upon which every person builds his or her life.
The foundation is the Gospel itself. Scripture consistently identifies Christ as the Rock upon whom God's people are built. Believers become God's spiritual house, indwelt by His Spirit and established upon the righteousness that comes through faith in Jesus Christ. The episode traces this theme from the Old Testament through the teachings of Jesus and the writings of Paul and Peter, showing how the entire Bible points toward Christ as the only secure foundation.
The second half of the episode returns to a question introduced previously: Who chooses whom? The discussion carefully examines passages that emphasize God's sovereign work in salvation alongside Scriptures that call every person to believe in Christ. Rather than dismissing one side of this biblical tension, the episode seeks to understand how these truths fit together within God's redemptive plan.
Listeners are reminded that Scripture teaches humanity's inability to save itself because of sin and spiritual blindness. Faith itself is presented as arising through hearing the message of Christ as the Holy Spirit works within the human heart. Salvation is ultimately the work of God's grace, yet every individual is called to repent, believe the Gospel, and follow Jesus.
The episode concludes by revisiting the major teachings of the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus warned against hypocritical judgment, encouraged His followers to ask, seek, and knock for God's wisdom, described the narrow gate that leads to life, warned about false prophets and false disciples, and finally challenged everyone to consider how they are building their lives.
For believers, the appropriate response is humility and gratitude. Rather than boasting in our own wisdom or efforts, we thank God for His mercy, His grace, and His work in drawing us to Christ. Our calling is to continue building upon the only foundation that will endure forever.
As this mini-series comes to a close, Episode #216 also prepares listeners for our next study, where we will examine Jesus' warning concerning the broad road that leads to destruction and the tragic consequences of rejecting God's gracious invitation.
May we all continue to hear God's Word, put it into practice, and build our lives upon the Rock that can never be shaken.
Simply Believe God and Follow Jesus.
