#036 The Israelites are free of Egypt!! They are camped at Mount Sinai where Moses went up the mountain to speak with God. God instructed Moses to tell the people, ‘You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. 5 Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; 6 and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation (Ex. 19:4-6)

The Israelites enter into covenant with God at Mount Sanai. Moses read them the Book of the Covenant and all israel responded, “All that the LORD has spoken we will do, and we will be obedient” (Exodus 24:7). What exactly obedience was to look like the Israelites did not yet know but that was to be revealed in the book of Leviticus.

In the book of Leviticus God provides the Israelites instructions on how a people who are God's treasured possession should live and what a kingdom of priests and a holy nation should reflect to the world. Central to the narrative is God's provision of atonement (covering over) of sin and the command that the people were to be holy (set apart, sanctified) as the Lord their God was holy.

Their moral and ethical character was to reflect and uphold the name of their God. “The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, 7 keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation" (Exodus 34:6-7).
