#065 Matthew’s first record of Jesus referring to himself as the Son of Man is Matt. 8:20. The religious leaders of Israel in that day (Priests, Rabbis, scribes, Pharisees, Sadducees, etc.) were intimately familiar with the significance of this term from Old Testament prophetic books.
It would be surprising if the scribe who heard Jesus use this term would not have immediately told other religious elites. This miracle worker is saying he is the Son of Man.
Daniel records that after the great tribulation still to come on the earth, God is going to give the kingdoms of the earth to one “like” a son of man. Daniel 7:13-14 - “I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. 14 And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.
This becomes the calling card name Jesus uses for the remainder of the book of Matthew. He is the Son of God who came in the likeness of man (the God/man) to establish the kingdom of heaven on earth now, but not yet. Now he’s gathering the inhabitants who will populate that eternal kingdom. The not yet is when the Son of Man returns to judge the world in righteousness and establish his kingdom of heaven on planet earth and rule all the nations from a new temple in Jerusalem.
